Hi everyone and good morning. If you’re like me, rising this morning was difficult since Titanic is approximately 47 hours and 13 minutes long. Whew! I’m gassed. But thank you to everyone for tweeting along last night. I checked the trending board at one point and saw that we were at #12 in the United States. Not too bad for our little community.
As I’m sipping my Cuban coffee today I realize that many of you have still never had it. This needs to be fixed, and rapidly. I looked around this morning and this is the best set of instructions I could find. A word to the wise: the most important thing is whipping the crap out of the sugar with a few drops of espresso (I use Cafe Bustelo for mine).1
HATM Podcast
We got a ton of messages on last week’s podcast with Sarah McNamara. Usually when we do these pods we try to pick a big movie that will draw people in and offer a new door to talk about history and scholarship. That wasn’t the case with Live by Night. The movie bombed (though I remain vigilant there’s a good movie on the cutting room floor) and yet still you came to hear this amazing story of this amazing place called Ybor City. I actually had the chance to run over to Ybor on Friday and Saturday to hear Sarah speak in person (including a walking tour!) and it was great to both support a friend and see the history firsthand. It was a packed house and a testament to what happens when you write really accessible history that matters to people. So happy for both Sarah and the people who love Ybor who have been waiting for a book like this.2 Here are a couple pics from the event:
I really appreciate the kind words of support for the pod and especially the guests who take the time to talk about their work on the show. I hope you dig what we’re doing. And I have two words to set the tone for Wednesday’s release: demon sex. You’re welcome. Until then, if you haven’t checked out Sarah’s episode yet, here ya go:
This week on HATM
With the Women’s World Cup starting on July 20th, it seems like an opportune time to inject a little global girl power into the lineup. So with that said, join in this Sunday, July 23 at 8pm Eastern on Disney+ for Bend It Like Beckham.
Big news coming. Hope to see ya soon.
If you order a Cuban coffee someplace that offers it, they’ll often give you a cafe con leche. You really want the colada con azucar (with sugar). That’s magic.

Another great Ybor City institution, The Columbia Restaurant, established in 1905 at 2117 E. 7th Avenue. Great book of their history written by Andrew T. Huse, c2009, University Press of Florida.
And thx for the tip about colada con azucar. 👍
Great show last night! Real crack!!!!
