We had an awesome night on HATM last night watching No Country for Old Men. If you’ve seen it, you know that the Cormac McCarthy adaption is a powerful thought piece on the morality of man and probably one of the five best films of the century. People really enjoyed livetweeting it last night.
Except me. And a few others, it turns out. Many of the HATM community found ourselves blocked from tweeting, liking, or even following new accounts during the event last night. As of the this morning I still am. With the community’s fifth birthday coming up in two weeks, it leaves me pondering what to do. First, a disclaimer.
I am so tired of Elon Musk.
Now, with that out of the way, let’s talk about how we continue talking history and building community.
My first thoughts are to continue to build a presence over on Blue Sky. It’s far from perfect, but it seems to be where most are moving to. You can find me there at herberthistory.bsky.social. I’m still contemplating on whether or not to move the Sunday night events there but I am starting to lean that way.
In the meantime, you can continue to find HATM on the podcast. We had an awesome talk with Natalia Mehlman Petrzela last week, talking about her work in understanding the changes in fitness culture and how we conceptualize our bodies over the last forty years. Here’s a snippet:
For the rest of the pod, check it out and other episodes here:
And for Natalia’s book, check it out right here: https://www.amazon.com/Fit-Nation-Americas-Exercise-Obsession/dp/022665110X/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1688388630&sr=1-1
The good news is that we have some BIG podcasts coming up. Subscribe to the pod and our episode about Kingdom of Heaven with Thomas Lecaque, John Wyatt Greenlee, Matthew Gabriele, and David Perry will download as soon as it drops Wednesday. Following that on July 12 is Sarah McNamara to talk about her new book about Ybor City, a town you may not know but absolutely should. And I’ve got so many amazing scholars coming soon.
What I’m reading:
I’m continuing my journey far past my own research by following the journey of Theodore Roosevelt with Candace Millard’s River of Doubt. I’m spending a lot of time in the truck lately, so I downloaded the book via Audible. I’m an hour in, but enjoying it so far.1
Hang tight, folks, we’ll push through this. Hope you all have a happy and safe Fourth of July. Oh, one last thing: big news coming soon. HUGE. Stay tuned.
Nope, I’m not compensated in any way for any of the books I tell you about. I just liking sharing cool history and the work of my friends. Maybe you’ll see something you like.
Twitter won’t be the same without HATM! Hopefully Bluesky opens to more people.
Would love to see you and HATM over on Mastodon. It's a really great community we're building, with lots of thoughtful engagement.
I'm not tech savvy, but was able to figure it out and really appreciate no ads and that I ultimately own my created content.
