Howdy from Houston! My father's descendents arrived on the Texas Gulf shore in 1844, trekked to northward in a wagon train, arrived at the Comal river in March1845, and helped found New Braunfels. Each adult male received one plot of land in the town and one plot for farming farther away. Those who left Germany were tough people who had big families that farmed for subsistence. They brought bland German recipes, but quickly embraced Mexican and Tex-Mex spices. (Even innovated packaging dried spices since the trek to San Antonio wasn't quick.) They also embraced native Texan ifoods like pecans and citus. Thank goodness some of them were open to change for us 6-generation Texans, transplanted Texans, and Coloradans. Happy dining!
