Really looking forward to your book. Three years in West Central Florida, near the Gulf of MEXICO, and I need to know more, especially about the cattle industry. My 8th grade social studies students in Ft. Worth, Texas didn’t believe me when I told them about Florida’s cattle. “No, Mrs. Crockett!! Florida is beaches and Disney!” Miss those kids.
Great post. Love the “I reckon” as navigation through things. And your family sounds amazing. Thanks for sharing about the rebrand and more about yourself.
I'm more in tune with the Florida accurately portrayed in the Elvis movies, having been to FL decades ago, and lived there for several years about 20 years ago.
Follow that Dream (1962)
Girl Happy (1965)
Clambake (1967).
Especially Follow that Dream.
Florida was so undeveloped back then, and prior to Castro inducing Cubans to flee to Florida, as well as the rise of the drug culture, Florida really was an ideal place to visit or retire.
Did know about all the scams selling homesteads to Northerners going back a century, which still seems to be the way of Florida. I was inadvertently involved in a scam where a new homeowner gave $2000 for property tax to the title company, and the real estate agent and the title company folks "hoodwinked" this person by sneaking the $2000 onto some line that is labeled one way, but FL courts allow it to be "extra commission." Who in Hades pays extra commission? I have a PhD in Macroeconomics and had taken classes in accounting, and I guarantee this line item on a title company's document was impossible to discern. I had to look online and find others complaining about this scam in Florida, so not just Pinellas County. The FL judges enforce the scam, insisting to the victims that every homeowner should hire a lawyer for closing. Rather than hold title companies and real estate agents liable?
If you want to write a book about history of such things, these policies are consistent with a Starred Chamber, which was supposed to be outlawed in England since John Lilburne (1640s). However, the Philadelphia area, to include several counties around the Valley Forge Military Institute, didn't stop enforcing Star Chamber policies, and still do to this day. That is where the secret societies in the US originated, which are the "deep state" because these societies took over the federal government in nearby DC, and these powerbrokers have established a strong presence in FL, to include Starred Chamber policies throughout the legal system.
Only Israel has a per capita attorney ratio as high as the US, which is not surprising since 20% to 30% of the Bar association members are Jewish, even though only 2% to 3% of the US population is.
More about Florida? Shockingly high insurance rates, and I was told that was because one law firm that was making a fortune from forcing pay-offs of false claims made by thousands of Hispanics, which the firm represented. The insurance rep claimed to be prohibited from naming the law firm (free speech?), but told me that there was a professional sports stadium in FL named after the law firm because of their big donation for naming rights.
Was at a writer's conference in FL around 2008, and I am not good at writing so my attempt was abandoned. The guest speaker is this man, who was so entertaining that none of us in attendance were surprised by the success of his anti-hero books. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Dorsey
I was waiting for you to get there; the ways in which the movies pod and the philosophical curiosity pod had been developing rather forecast this rebrand if anyone had been paying the least attention.
You're too curious a dude, especially while chatting films, to have limited yourself.

You had me BEFORE teasing the "history of ax murder" at the end... just to be clear. 🤓 🪓
Didn't know about the cattle shaping FL history.
