So last night was another huge night for the HATM watch party. 35 years and one week ago The Little Mermaid debuted in theaters and perhaps saved the Walt Disney Company in the process. The film ushered in what is known in Disney circles as the Disney Renaissance, a ten year period featuring some of the films we know best: The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and of course The Little Mermaid.
I’ve been trying to schedule lighter fare as of late. It just doesn’t seem the right time for big, heavy movies, though they will return. What is evident, however, is that many of our former twitter regulars have themselves returned to the #HATM fold. And last night’s The Little Mermaid made a big splash. That feels really good. As I skeeted last night, we own Sunday nights.
So obviously with Thanksgiving coming up we have a lot on our plates.1 Here’s what’s on ours: On Monday evening I’ll be recording a podcast with Waitman Beorn on the film Defiance, which will likely air in January (more on that in a sec). On Tuesday, I’ll be recording with Roman historians Sarah Bond and Bret Devereaux about the film Gladiator II, which will release later this week in case you are still deciding whether or not to see it over the holiday weekend.
On Tuesday, we’ll be releasing a new episode of Reckoning with Jason Herbert featuring Columbia University Economist Stephan Meier about his new book, The Employee Advantage: How Putting Workers First Helps Business Thrive. This was an unexpectedly cool conversation and I learned a ton. I think you’ll like it.
We’ll release the Gladiator II episode Wednesday evening, assuming HATM Producer Fletcher Powell does not kill me first. But it may be Friday. Apparently he has a “family” that he “loves” and wants to “enjoy a holiday together without producing a podcast.” The nerve.
Speaking of which, if you’re interested in either pod, you can subscribe to them here:
By the way, big thanks to those of you who have left reviews on the podcasts. I’m told that really helps.
Finally, let’s talk about this week’s movie for the Sunday night watch party. I think you guys probably know that I’m a sucker for Hallmark-style holiday movies so we’re gonna roll with one. Join us this Sunday, December 1 (how is that possible) at 8pm for Hot Frosty, available on Netflix.
Hope your Thanksgiving week is off to a wonderful start.
Jason
I swear to god I am not trying to make these puns.
