COMBEE: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom During the Civil War
Edda Fields-Black's masterpiece
Good morning and happy Friday everyone.
We have big news and a reason to celebrate. Friend of HATM Edda Fields-Black was awarded the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize this week. This is awarded annually for the finest scholarly work in English on Abraham Lincoln, the American Civil War soldier, or the American Civil War era.1
I first got to know of Edda’s work two years ago this week during a fishing trip with historians Chris Barr and Adam Domby when neither of them would stop talking about her work. This eventually led to Edda coming on the podcast to talk about the film Harriet along with her book. I’ve linked those episodes below along with a link to her book, which is absolutely amazing.
Congratulations Edda! You so deserve all of this.

And hey, we’re running a special on paid subscriptions right now by cutting the rate by 50%. So if you want to help, you can do so each month for as little as a $5 pledge, or support my writing and content with $40 or $75 subscriptions. It’ll really help out and you can do so at the link below. Either way, I’m just glad you’re here.
Tip of the cap to my friend Kevin Levin’s excellent Substack for sharing the news. If you’re interested in all things Civil War, Kevin is a great place to start and a really great dude.
