Sometimes I get full of piss and vinegar and think anything is possible. This is sometimes good, sometimes bad. I’ve been thinking about ways to show off the work of Lou Moore, a guy who I’ve followed on social media for years. He wrote a tremendous book that looks at manhood through the lives of African American boxers at the turn of the twentieth century called I Fight for a Living: Boxing and the Battle for Black Manhood: 1880-1915.
I’ve got a lot of respect for Lou. In fact, I led two consecutive years’ teaching US History courses based off his thoughts on Colin Kaepernick and why and how he protested police brutality in the United States. So I thought maybe I could get a special guest. But who? Maybe Apollo Creed himself, Carl Weathers.
Mr. Weathers has a twitter account and is pretty active. Seems like a good dude. And he’d be an awesome guest for you guys to hear. Who wouldn’t want to hear him talk about his performances in the Rocky franchise? Time to take a shot. After looking for alternative contact information, I worked up the nerve and fired off a tweet.
Many of you saw it and either commented or retweeted. I waited and watched. And waited. And then, he replied.
So that wasn’t the response we hoped for. But you know what? That’s ok. Mr. Weathers doesn’t owe me anything. But he was kind enough to take the time to respond. We talked to Carl Weathers today. Apollo Creed. Action Jackson. Greef Karga. That’s still pretty cool. And it’s a good reminder that we’re not going to land every guest, but that shouldn’t stop us from trying. You simply do not get what you do not ask for. But eventually, we’ll start to land some actors and filmmakers on the pod and add some different dimensions for you guys.
In the meantime, you’ll still get to hear an awesome discussion with Lou Moore, as we are currently thinking about good days to record. And that ain’t bad either.
We’re doing good things here, folks. I know it.
I’d initially planned on writing a piece about John Cusack and this week’s podcast so I could brag on my great friend Kate Jewell. But I’m absolutely running on empty lately. And I’d rather give you a fully thought out piece than something junky. So that’ll wait a couple days. I’m off to Denver Friday night so I can catch a rare concert- Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats- probably my favorite artist right now. But if you haven’t checked out Kate’s appearance on the pod to talk about the history of college radio, now is your chance. It was such a cool and wide ranging discussion. I hope you like it. I’ve got an excerpt and links below.
Finally a bit of news on that wolf reintroduction I told you about earlier. The state of Colorado is going to allow middle schoolers to choose their names. Kinda cool.
Ok, I’m pooped. Thanks for being here.
