Vancouver Island is a spectacular place, as is B.C. In general. The fly fishing can be awesome if you get a chance next time. For a real thrill,( challenge?), see if you can make the drive through the Rockies east to Alberta. From Calgary you are a straight shot south to Montana and back to CO.

We lived in Washington State, the Tri-Cities, in 1979, and drove up to Vancouver. Such a beautiful city. Thx for bringing back good memories. 🥰

Next time you're on that island, drive up the mountains. We skied up there and it was amazing to look out and see the water way below.

Oh I wish we’d had time to do so. The island is a real treat.

There was only a passing mention of diversity, but I want to comment on it as a disastrously underestimated source of domestic conflict in American society.

I'm talking about the arbitary exaggeration of the value of diversity. Earlier, if Swedes did something extraordinary, it was explained that they could do it because they were a "small, homogeneous" society. Championing diversity as an independent good emerged as a progressive tactic to justify radical policies against discrimination. They included labelling nonconforming opinion as racism. I refrained from articulating these perspectives earlier because I would have likely beeen labelled, although I've been an active supporter of African Americans throughout my career.

E pluribus Unum worked when immigrants arrived legally and assimilated into American society. Jewish comedians from the 1930s adopted anglicized names to fit in. Under misguided policies of past decades, diversity became celebrated for its supposed contribution to strength in society. Candidates for faculty positions in leading universities had to sign diversity commitments. The greatest irrationality was 500 communities and some states that declared themselves sanctuaries for illegal migrants against enforcement of federal immigration law. The result was predictable: counterreaction and Donald Trump. - who had a keen eye for social weaknesses that he could exploit. Do you like what's happening now?
