Just because it’s November 1st doesn’t mean spooky season is over quite yet. This week we invited Emergency Physician N.J. Gallegos to talk about Flatliners (1990). Not only does N.J. have a special understanding of medical school and preventative care, she is also the author of a new horror novel, just in time for your late fall reads or holiday gifts. My mom and N.J.’s wife are both nurses, so we had a lot of fun talking about the dynamics of the E.R.:
In some ways, N.J.’s appearance, along with that of Charlie Pierce earlier in the year represents an expansion of what I want the HATM Podcast to do and be for you. I want to broaden our understandings of the world through film and conversations and I think you’ll see that N.J. and I have a lot to talk about. In addition to the film, her work as a doctor and memories of medical school, we go on about our shared love of all things Star Wars and anticipation for what’s next to come in a galaxy far, far, away. (She’s already agreed to come back when we do an Ahsoka Podcast, so I hope you’re ready.) N.J. is one of my favorite people to follow on twitter. She’s fun, posts the best memes, and you are more than likely to see a lot of her cat, Cat Bane. You can find her on twitter at DrSpooky_ER.
You can find her book below:
And you can find our podcast episode right here:
And don’t forget if you’re in Denver to come on out to Wynkoop Brewing for the HATM LIVE PODCAST with guest Kathleen Belew on Saturday, November 11 at 6pm mountain. We’ll be talking about Red Dawn and taking questions from the audience. It’s free to attend (you are allowed to buy me a beer) and it’s going to be a blast.
One last thing- I just set up the pledge feature here on Substack. I cannot express my gratitude enough to those of you who have donated. This beast costs a fortune to run while we begin to look for sponsorships in Year Two. It really helps take the burden off of the operational costs of HATM. Thank you regardless for reading, listening, and being part of this community we have built over the past five and half years.
