When I first learned if Gene Hackman’s passing, I knew we’d need to do one of his films on the watch party. At the time, only Hoosiers was available on the major streaming services and because it’s basketball season it made sense to do.
But there were a couple films that came to mind, given the state of things: Crimson Tide and Enemy of the State. Unfortunately they weren’t available. However, in the interim the folks at Amazon secured the rights to the former and made it available on streaming. And because Hackman was such an icon, why not make the rare exception of showing two films featuring the same actor back to back? Folks, HACKMANTHON 2025 IS REAL.
And besides, as one of our viewers pointed out last week, all films speak to the era in which they were made. So this movie, featuring one of the great showdowns on film between Hackman and Denzel Washington, relates Clinton-era concerns about rogue states and the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the preceding decades. Plus, it’s inspired by an incident involving a Soviet sub that almost fired on the U.S. during the Cuban Missile Crisis. And with Russia sadly taking up so much of our minds for other reasons, this seems to be an ideal time to revisit Tony Scott’s submarine thriller.
So with all that said, join us on Blue Sky this Sunday, March 16 at 8pm eastern to watch CRIMSON TIDE, available on Amazon Prime Video. If you haven’t seen the film, the trailer is below. (Prepare yourself for a who’s who of Hollywood in the cast.)
See you Sunday.
