Hi everyone,
Today is a quick story with a couple pictures. Growing up, Easter was always big in our home. I come from devout Southern Baptist stock and that of course meant celebrating the resurrection of a Jewish carpenter in only the most logical way whatsoever—via little plastic eggs filled with candy laid by a magical rabbit.
Ok so maybe I was never born to be a theologian, but I do have an appreciation for all the days that bring families together, especially the ones that mean I get candy or other sweets (as you can imagine, Halloween is also high on my list). And while I no longer practice any sort of faith, I certainly recognize the role it plays in other people’s lives. So I hope that if today means something special in your world, that you are having wonderful Sunday.
As for me, I thought I’d share with you two pictures. One, you may have seen before. This is of my little brother and me in Kentucky circa 1981. It’s Easter time, because I can remember that we both received that little bunny my (yes, I’ll admit it) cuter sibling is holding. I had one too, but was somehow wise enough at the age of four not to play with it while admiring the day’s haul of catfish.
Somehow, my rabbit managed to escape that day and survive with me over these last 44 years. He sits now on the top bookshelf next to my great grandmother’s cookie jar and a cutout of the state of Kentucky that my mom sent me. He’s one of the oldest things I have. I’ve always kept this guy close to me. I’ll probably never live in the Bluegrass again, but he is a reliable reminder of home.
I don’t have any great revelation for you today (that’s what you read Heather’s substack for). But maybe a happy reminder to hold true to the things that have meaning to you, especially in these days.
And if you don’t have family to spend time with today, remember that you always have one right here in this community we’ve built together.
Wishing you love and happiness today and all days,
Jason
Thank you! And you. Nice to be part of a community here.
